The Nebo was an old railway transport vessel who probably capsized because of a huge wave just one km northwest of Aliwal Shoal.

The Nebo was an old 200 ton steamship used in 1884 as a cargo vessel between Sunderland and Durban. She was carrying building materials for the Amanzimtoti railway bridge when she struck Aliwal Shoal on May 20, 1884. Several reports mention a pinnacle to be the reason of its sinking but this coral head has never been reported again. Another story about being overloaded which makes it easy to capsize even by huge waves is much more believed. During the years, the wreck has been heavily destroyed by surge resulting in a broken hull with only a few pieces of the stern left which are intact.

The Nebo sits upside down and is heavily demolished. Several sights still recognizable are its propellers and a boiler situated right on the deck. Huge schools of baitfish congregate together in the darker places of the wreck. Shrimps are very common near the boiler and pelagic species such as barracuda and tuna continually hunt for smaller baitfish.
