The scuttled shipwreck Aster has extended the already great artificial reef near Hout Bay significantly.

The Aster used to be a 27meter long 360-ton fishing trawler, more specifically an African east coast lobster (crayfish) harvester. When she was named scrap in 1994, they decided to make her diver proof by removing metal scrapings, hatches, windows, doors and cleaning her of oil. Under the leadership of Cleeve Robertson from Capetown divers they provided save swimthroughs and was then finally scuttled on 8 August 1998 just outside Hout Bay, next to the Katzmaru to extent the artificial reef here. It took 4 hours before she finally landed upright on the ocean floor.

One of the interesting sights underwater is the lobster net shoot. Diving at shipwreck the Aster is often combined with a short dive on the Katzmaru since she is situated only 20 meter to the south.
