Badgat is a famous inland freshwater cave system formed out of one of South Africa's flooded asbestos mines.

Name Dive Site:Badgat
Depth: 0-180m (0-590ft)
Visibility: 5-50m (16-164ft)
Specifications:

Badgat used to be an old mine which has flooded these days creating a deep and extensive cave dive. Its oval shaped opening is the size of 120 times 80 meters offering several old mining shafts with long tunnels at multiple depth levels. The shallowest level at 18 meter often is troubled with bad visibilities and silt with temperatures between 18 and 24 depending on the season. Visibility increases with depth known to extend fifty meters with water of 18 degrees constantly. There are shafts at 9m (30'), 18m (60'), 24m (80'), 38m (125'), 48m (158'), 68m (224'), 108m (356') and beyond. For safety, there should always be a direct line to the surface and entering the tunnels is for certified cave divers only. For recreational open water divers it is possible to dive here seeing the entrances of the mine shafts.

Besides diving at Badgat most people also enjoy its spectacular surroundings. It is set in a peaceful environment about 900 meters above sea level, located at the farm Sterkspruit about 25 kilometers from Badplaas, Eastern Transvaal. It is home to over 300 species of birds and filled with four wheel drive tracks and walking trails. Enjoy this destination and dive one of South Africa's best cave dives.

They are busy fencing the area around the dive site off, so that game (incl. Elephants, Lions and Leopards) can be brought around the farm. Thus from the main road to the dive center will be then a game drive included in a dive weekend. It's always great to be there!
