Dive sites in South Africa, Sodwana Bay

Depth: 1-40m (3-131ft) and deeper
Visibility: 10-50m (32-164ft) and more

Time to visit: All year around with warmest water in summer (nov-feb)

This bay situated in coastal dunes, has large wooden, luxury accommodations nestled in lush coastal vegetation. It is part of the greater St Lucia Wetland Park and is well preserved. All kinds of activities can be done here, including fishing, spotting turtles in summer and diving.

The fish and coral diversity of Sodwana's coral reef is overwhelming. It has many type of corals which cannot be found elsewhere. For divers, Leven point is most often taken as a starting point. From there many reefs can be found in northern direction. Some of the more famous ones are Two, Five and Nine Mile Reef. Dive boats, or rubber ducks as they call them, can reach all dive sites. Dive sites that meet all levels of skills as depth can be 10 meters and shallower, but it can also exceed 30 meters. There are caves, pinnacles and many places are famous for its sharks.

Allthough the water is at its coldest then, the best time for diving is between April and September. In summer, water temperatures can reach 25 degrees, while in winter they can go below 19. December and january are also some nice month to come here, because this is the time that turtles lay their eggs. Also some sharks are here only in the first two months of the year.
